Barcelona without the tour buses: a slower city beyond the Ramblas

La Rambla is for the cruise crowd. The Barcelona you came for sits one Metro stop north in Gràcia, east in Poblenou, or up the hill in Sant Antoni.

Three days in Barcelona on a Sagrada-Família-and-Park-Güell itinerary will work; it will also leave you with the impression that Barcelona is a city of queues and bus tours. It isn’t. The neighbourhood city — Gràcia’s squares at 8pm, Sant Antoni’s renovated market on a Saturday morning, Poblenou’s post-industrial cafés — is where the slower version of the trip lives.

Coffee — Sant Antoni, Gràcia, the Born

Nømad (multiple) is the dependable third-wave option. Satan’s Coffee Corner (Gòtic / Poblenou) has the cult following for a reason. Onna Café in Sant Antoni and SlowMov up in Gràcia are the neighbourhood-anchored ones — the kind of place where the barista knows the regulars.

Lunch and dinner — Gràcia, Sant Antoni

Bar Cañete (Raval) is famous and still good; Bar del Pla (Born) is the Catalan version of perfect. Up in Gràcia, Bar Bodega Quimet is the lunch of small plates and vermouth you’ll think about for a year. In Sant Antoni: Els Sortidors del Parlament for vermouth, El Tomàs de Sarrià if you’ll head up the hill for the city’s definitive patatas bravas.

Galleries, records, the slow afternoon

Fundació Antoni Tàpies and the MACBA are obvious; less obvious is the Fundació Joan Brossa or any of the small Gòtic galleries (Galería ADN, Galería Mayoral). Discos Castelló on Tallers is the record-shop street’s anchor. For books, La Central del Raval is one of the great independent bookshops in Europe.

Stay above Plaça de Catalunya for one trip — Gràcia, Sant Antoni or Sant Gervasi. The city is twenty minutes from anywhere and a different city most of the day.
